Ah.............Little Mountain! I had a lot of good times there, R/C gliders in the 60's and then hang gliders in the 70's. Like so many other SoCal sites the houses took the LZ.

You have an impressive list there. I used to just keep flying the same several sites in SoCal.

Little Mountain was great, a nice bowl into the prevailing wind. That is where my first 360 was performed after the 180 in the failed attempt half way up the mountain.

Frank, I know you flew Little Norco.

I know Matt and Ernie flew the Tewinkle Hill.

It really is too bad we can’t fly Fairview Park, a 35 to 40 foot west facing ridge. With today’s gliders Fairview Park would be a regular daily soaring experience, environmental sensitive area now.

I left out Salt Creek, now the Ritz-Carlton.

I was wondering where you got that list ... until I checked the hg.org link.

I left out Marina Beach and the Craters (I don't remember which one) in Arizona.

Thanks for starting the topic. :)

Rick,

You got a laugh out of me. I am glad I am still around to laugh about it.

Now the list is Where I Launched From (WILF).

Landing is a whole different list.

Now how many people can say they have landed at Walts Point? 9200 Feet MSL.

Was that a landing?

I walked away from it.

Hey Bob, you forgot flying here in NYS. Bunny hill perhaps but you did fly!

And speaking about where Megenta-B got your list, I went there also and looked up my list (from 2007).

* * * * * * *

Here goes, and in no particular (actually just how I remembered them - and I know I missed a couple) order:

**Mt Peter Ski Area, Greenwood Lake, NY
*Kitty Hawk, NC
Holiday Mountian Ski Area, Near Monticello, NY
Wurtzborough, NY
***Ellenville, NY all regular launches,
“ ” North Knoll (way before MW installed their ramp),
“ ” Bear Cliffs,
“ ” Both Rt 52 road launches
Schunemunk Ridge, near Woodbury, NY
Ellenville airport (ATOL towing)
Randall airport (ATOL towing), Middletown, NY
*(Eastern end) North Shore of Long Island, NY
All 3 Fly High T-Hills
Moutain Wings “Bee Hill” and LZ T-Hills
***Swangunk cliffs, west of New Paltz, NY
Mt Utsayantha (SW, NW and NE launches), Stamford, NY
**Henson’s Gap, Dunlap, TN
T-Hills south of Dunlap, TN
**North side of Henson’s Gap (cliff launch), Dunlap TN
**Whitwell, TN
Competition site ’88 Nationals, Springers?, GA
Lookout Mountain, GA
**Dunlap, CA
**Marshal Peak, CA
***Mt Eldon, Hawthorne, NV
**Point of the Mountain, (north and south) Draper, UT
**Camel Pass, south of Provo, UT
Francis Peak, north of Salt Lake, UT
**Paradox, CO
**Willow Creek, CO
***Telluride, CO
Morningside Flight Park, Claremont, NH
Clairmont airport, (ATOL towing) Claremont, NH
**Mt Ascutney, Windsor, VT
*North Truro (Cape Cod), MA
Little Gap, PA
Camel Back, PA
East Stroudsburg Airport (ATOL towing), PA
Blairstown airport (Cosmos Trike Aero towing), Blairstown, NJ
Newton (T-Hill), NJ
Jelleystone Camp Ground (T-Hill), ?, NJ
Wanaque, NJ
*Meadowlands (landfill site), Rutherford, NJ
Katydid, Chemung, NY
Blue Swan airport (ATOL towing), Waverly, PA
**Harris Hill, Big Flats, NY
T-Hill north of Painted Post, NY
Draht Hill, Elmira, NY
Indian Cliffs, West Elmira, NY
Mossy Banks, Bath, NY
**Mt Washington, south of Hammondsport, NY
**Italy Hill, Italy, NY
Dansville, NY
Bristol, South Bristol, NY
***New site - West facing ridge, West Cameron, NY (first flown[again, after 30 years?] on 11/4/07)
Dockweiller Beach, LA, CA
Little Hill, Erwin, NY

This exercise was great. I realized I forgot the name of the ski area where I first trained (in spring and summer of '75). Had to look it up to remember. It's at the top of the list. Sites with * in front of them rank high on my list. The more *s the better (or more impressive) the site.

* * * * * * *

I was able to add a couple to the end of the list. They both involved Bob's help.

That's quite a list Scott!

You're right Scott. Here's another update:

   - Little Black, CA (HG)
   - Spider Woods, CA
   - Sam's ridge near Leaky, Texas
   - Wallaby Ranch, Florida (tandem with Malcolm)
   - Little Hill (aka Scott's ridge), Erwin, New York

Thanks for starting this topic Mike.

What about attempted launches?

I would list an unknown ridge above Copper Mountain Dry Lake near Joshua Tree, CA. No wind then a little puff and I started running. Crashed on the rock strewn face of the hill and was dragged to the edge of the drop off.

Driving out I stopped at a gas station in Yucca Valley and threw away my torn and bloody flannel shirt and washed most of the blood off my chest, arms, and face. I wondered why the station attendant didn't ask me what happened. Then I realized it was a popular dirt bike riding area and she saw this sort of thing frequently.

I also had a big cut on my chin that bled on my inlaws white table cloth - it was Thanksgiving Day.

I never did return to that desert ridge to attempt lunch again. But I sure look over at it, now many years later, when driving 29 Palms Hwy through the area.

In those early HG days we always were looking for likely launch and landing sites as we drove around. I wonder in the years that have passed how many HG or PG flights may have been made or attempted, from that desert ridge that I tried to "pioneer" for hang gliding? I have never seen one there. I named it "Munch Chin Ridge". :)
