Some of these are pretty cool, shots of Torrey in the early 80s, Escape Country, Burp Earwig...

A good day at Torrey...I can see my red VW van in the parking lot! My kite isn't on it. Oh, right...

Beautiful pictures Barb!

Funny that I only saw Torrey Pines for the first time last May. But being an east coast pilot it's not so hard to understand. It's also odd to not see all the "concessionaire" build-up that has taken place over time. :o  :o

Hey, and where are all those "other" soaring devices? :wtf: :lolno:

PS - A friend and I had the chance to visit Torrey back in the late 80's. But we understood that the winds weren't too favorable during the summer so we headed instead to Dunlap, CA (we stopped in Reno, then Walker Lake [near Hawthorne, NV] then Burbank [sister's home] on the way).

Awesome picture Barb!!

I first visited Torrey in the spring of 1983, and that picture is EXACTLY as I remember it. I remember walking up the hill to the trailer and asking about flying there. I didn't have enough experience back then to fly Torrey, but I remember it just like that picture shows it.

Thanks very very very much for joining us here on the US Hawks!!

By the way, tomorrow (Sunday) is our Torrey Hawks "Second Sunday at Torrey" and you're welcome to stop by. I usually get there in the afternoon, and I bring food and soft drinks for our members. Give me a call at 858-204-7499 if you're interested.

Thanks again for the historic pictures.

Barb,
Thanks for posting.

Lots of rigid wings on this day, seems.

You were up there, a good deal above the cliff. Why was all the others on the ground? :eh:

There is some development shown in the pic. Well the radar station, that sat on the edge near the trailer, is gone by this time.

Thanks again,

Thank kew, thank kew...more to come after I photoshop the hairs and spots away.
When I started flying Torrey, there was nothing on the hill but a shed with a pay phone in it.
Then Hawxhurst got the first Flight Realities trailer put out there.

Two things about the current management.
Who the eff thought grass was a good idea on a sloping LZ?
Who the eff thought fan palms were a good idea? I imagine they'd just be another obstacle on a whackin northwest day. That stupid tree is kind of right in my approach line, but I don't fly there any more so it's your problem now.

A couple of months ago, I went to Torrey around noon on the 2nd Sunday but nobody was there except wuffos. Yesterday, I was on a 4 hour motorcycle ride and today I feel the same as I did after a long day of soaring. Slightly beaten up, but pleasant.

Rigid wings mean good wind. I imagine everyone still on the ground already got their air, and are taking a break.

Neither the City nor the conce$$ionaires have had any oversight from the citizens and pilots who fly there. Gaining that oversight so pilots could have some say in what happens to our City Park has been my effort for the last 10 years. Trying to gain that simple thing has led to USHPA expelling me last year.

Let me apologize personally for that. I generally plan to get there by noon, but it's often a bit later by the time I go to the grocery store and buy the food. If you ever want to go again, please give me a call at 858-204-7499 and I'll be sure to be there on time.
