Leaving the US Hawks

Postby wingspan33 » Fri Aug 14, 2015 12:55 pm

I regret to inform my fellow members of the US Hawks that as of now I am terminating my membership in the US Hawks. It seems that Bob and I are experiencing a conflict that simply can not be resolved. I hope that things go well for my, as of now, fellow members. Take care and so long.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your 5 years of service and friendship to the US Hawks.

I tend to agree with your statement that we're experiencing a conflict. And while I wouldn't say that it can not be resolved, it does seem unlikely that it will be.

I too wish that things go well for you, and please contact me or the US Hawks if we can help you in your flying or otherwise.

Thanks again for being a founding member of the US Hawks.

Sincerely,
Bob Kuczewski

From personal experience, I know how tough it can be to be a loser. Your leaving is a losing experience for you, and someday you'll wake up, realizing what a loser you are.

I'm not apologizing for Bob. I love him, and yet I can empathize with those that have trouble dealing with powerful personalities.

It ain't easy going against the grain, that's why I respect Bob so much. I have pity for those not strong enough to stick this one out, as I truly believe in this cause.

I only regret not being smart enough to make a strong contribution. But a contribution, even a weak one, is better than never having tried at all.

Reconsider. You can contribute something, and letting a petty personality conflict get in your way is not just a loss for you, but a loss for the rest of us as well.

We need you. Please help, it's important to you and us...

I want to re-interpret the term "loser", as I don't intend it as an insult, but rather as a term indicating the condition of having lost something of value.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wa4TQIzM3hE

Listen to the lyrics. He's not claiming to be a "loser" in the usual sense, but instead is admitting that he's lost something of value to him.

You can only lose by leaving the Hawks. And your loss is a loss to the rest of us, a loss we can ill afford.

Please don't allow a simple personality conflict get between you and a worthy cause.

The Beatles ... my how time has flown.

Thanks very much for your kind words Steve.

Here's my theory of the US Hawks ... and people in general.

People have many many dimensions in their personalities. Each dimension has its own distribution with most folks clustered around the middle and fewer people distributed at both ends.

If there were just one dimension, it wouldn't be too hard to find people aligned with you almost anywhere along that line. But with dozens (or hundreds?!) of dimensions, it gets harder and harder to find people who agree with you on all of them ... especially if you move out toward the fringe.

We're all hang glider pilots, and that certainly puts us out on the far end of one of those dimensions. Many among us (including Scott) are highly intelligent and highly individualistic. That's out there on another fringe of that distribution. Many of us are also not happy with the mainstream direction that USHPA has gone. That puts us out in another fringe group. Now if you throw in things like politics (left and right), religion (many to choose from), and a million other little differences (paper or plastic, Beatles or Bob Dylan, Ginger or Mary Ann) then it's really very very unlikely that we'll be able to find enough of us to actually accomplish the goal of building a new hang gliding association. That's why I generally try not to bring up too much about religion or politics or anything else because it's just not helpful to us coming together to accomplish the monumental task before us.

If the US Hawks is going to survive, we're going to have to realize that we're all very different and maybe don't agree with each other on a lot of things. If we're going to work together, we're going to have to ignore all those glaring differences and focus on our common goals. That's our only hope. Unfortunately, there are many out there who want to torpedo our efforts, and that makes it all that much more difficult.

Steve, I've been reading your posts on other forums, and I really appreciate that you understand what we're trying to accomplish. Whether we ever get there or not, it's great to have met and worked with so many great people along the way. Scott is certainly included in that list, and I hope he'll consider rejoining us when it feels right for him. I hope your words have helped him in that direction.
