Map the tie downs of the site. Have accurate measurements from landmarks, so the anchors may be located when the tie downs are hidden by blown sand or when vandals have cut the ropes resulting in hidden anchor cable stub. The map would be kept in the office. Have triangulation means to locate the anchors. [Way #75 inspired from seeing the volunteer work of US Hawks HGA founder Bob Kuczewski who is also a member of FDGS. ]

When a tie down is missing its rope, then dig as necessary to expose the cable terminal; clear any stub rope. Replace a new rope to the specifications of the site manager. Type of rope and length of rope matters. The nose rope is longer. The basebar rope is shorter. Find out the lengths. Return shovel, rake, and excess rope. [[This Way #77 was inspired by observing the volunteer action of such on July 5, 2015, of Bob Kuczewski, visiting founder of U.S. Hawks HGA, the only national org in the US focused just on hang gliders and hang gliding. ]]

Supply pages in clear plastic cover for the three-ring notebook. Each page would provide images and procedures for specific tasks or ways of serving the site. Digitized copies of such pages would be online stored in the FDGS site.

Welcome HGMA-and-Wills-Wing Mike Meier to Dockweiler on July 11, 2015, at the James Hobson and Richard Miller Remembrance Day. In general welcome any and all visitors to the site. The Los Angeles City's 2000 site dedication resolution noted some 1940 wooden glider activity at Dockweiler. Anyone is invited to find references for such 1940 activity at the site. Welcome such visitors at future annual special days at the Dockweiler site.

Make gliders and kites from picked-up beach debris.
Said to the trash: If you find your way onto our HG site, be prepared to fly!

[E.g., July 7, 2015, Tuesday, on a site-closed-to-inhabited-wing-flight day, I picked up sparkler sticks, food-packaging cellophane, and broken-body-board skin among other items. I made a one-wing two-far-spread anchored kite that flew with a special oscillation movement. And a second spine-stick-only single-string kite was made and flew quite well. I brought tape and sewing thread and ballpoint pen. Beer can became a spool for the single-line tether. Foam-cup part dressed one tail. Etc. All the while I was thinking of the high craftsmanship that was employed by Otto L. and his brother for their hang gliders. ]

Sharing up-to-date information about the air that arrives off the water for our flights at Dockweiler. There has been vast improvement the outfall's treated water that mixes with the bay water. The bay water partly affects the air in the wind that arrives to our hang gliding. Accurate information about the quantity and quality of the treated water that enters the bay might be reported. The treated water is different from what goes into the bay from storm drains, creeks, La Ballona Creek. Post-storm waters and malfunction events affect the bay water; ship droppings, yacht reliefs, and other vectors provide some matter that might erroneously be blamed on the Hyperion Treatment Plant. Students or others might provide a poster that could be displayed.

1990s – Full Secondary System Rebuilt

The $1.6 billion sludge-out to full secondary construction program replaced nearly every 1950-vintage wastewater processing system at Hyperion while the plant continuously treated 350 mgd and met all NPDES permit requirements. The full secondary system, completed in 1998, meant:

treatment capacity was expanded to prevent virtually all minute particles suspended in effluent from being discharged to the ocean environment
production of the cleanest effluent in over 100 years
the end of wastewater spills at Hyperion
a 95% reduction in the amount of wastewater solids going into Santa Monica Bay
the elimination of the Bay's ecological dead-zone near the mouth of the sludge outfall
vast improvements in biological integrity of the bottom-dwelling marine community
remarkable increases in the relative abundance of many indicator-species
partnerships among the public, regulatory agencies, government and discharges that led to one of the great environmental achievements of the 20th Century.
Today, further improvements at Hyperion are being planned and built to keep the plant on the leading edge environmental protection. Air emission controls continue to represent the leading edge of technology. Odor management facilities are integrated in all improvements. Resource recovery programs capitalize upon every possible opportunity to recycle renewable resources of wastewater and sludge treatment by-products.

Share sand-navigation tips. A friend might produce a page in the site's friend notebook. Post in our forum tips and notes about navigating on dry or wet sand. What are some safety tips? Types of debris? Tar balls? Sand in shoes and socks. How to care for sand challenges. Sand on glider parts? Cleaning sand off glider parts and body and shoes, etc.?

Here is one: When walking on the sand with or without a glider, step in the sand lows or sand valleys or prior foot-indents, etc. rather than stepping on the sand peaks. One will notice immediately the lower amount of calories spent by habitually using the low points of the sand deck. Try it! However, if one is fresh and deliberately wants a stressing workout, then do just the opposite and have each step be on a sand peak!

Imprint a toss flying disc or ring (e.g. Frisbee, etc.) with image of hang glider and "Dockweiler" or U.S. Hawks. Have URL imprinted also. Give/sell the flying disk. In the instructions for flight, tell about aerodynamics of the flying disk and of hang gliders. Tell why a spinning tossed disk gradually twists its flight path one way for clockwise spinning of the disk, and twists the a different way for counterclockwise spin; that is, why the twist at all and not just flat out without twist in the flight path? Some analyses of disk flight neglect the flight-path axial twist caused by the imbalance of lift caused by the difference of skin drag on the forward-gong half of the disk compared to the aft-going half of the rotating disk. Have fun. Off to the side of the HG flight area, one may toss flying disks. The more people playing off to the side of the HG flight area, then the more people will wonder how to fly themselves in a HG. Have a web forum topic dedicated to the disks or rings within the hang glider forum space; note in the topic thread various principles that apply to hang glider flight.

Many essays on rotating disk flight have omissions and even aerodynamic errors stated. Getting real mastery over all the dynamics of tossed flying disks is apparently not as easy as some writers seem to think; such will be found to be true even when the essay seems to be coming from high level academia. So, placing some links here does not mean that the linked essays are free from error; but a start here is given:

The various forces applied are not centered on the disc though, so to keep the Frisbee from flipping over a high angular momentum is needed. This angular momentum resists the torque caused by the various forces.
