The struts are often based on the tube and extend generally perpendicular to the boom (but may be set at other angles, especially sometimes when adjustment is wanted via angle changing of the strut mounting angle). Various tradeoffs are faced when using such devices: drag, lower mast mass, costs, other methods to achieve results, ...
