The San Diego Police Department is the latest law enforcement agency that has come under scrutiny of federal officials.

The US attorney's office and FBI have announced they'll be launching a criminal investigation into alleged incidents of officer misconduct, and the Department of Justice will be reviewing additional cases as well.

The SDPD was launched into the national spotlight several years ago when now former officer Anthony Arevalos was convicted on charges relating to trading sexual favors during traffic stops in exchange for turning a blind eye to DUI and other vehicle code violations.

A second round of allegations came last month, after another officer was brought up on charges for a similar offense.

Since that time, Police Chief Bill Landsowne has stepped down and he's been replaced by Assistant Chief Shelley Zimmerman. The SDPD reportedly said the federal probe will last between 6 and 8 months and will leave no stone unturned.

Just a note, I wonder if this mafia is extorting the gliderport and the USHPA in some way?

We should all look into those attached links.

I would not say that I have little doubt as to the allegations, but in consideration of what has been going on at Torrey Pines Glider Port (aka Air California Adventure Inc.), it would seem that a (once upon a time) San Diego under cover narcotics officer may have been handed a few "favors" along the way. If so, let's hope the FBI finds a link!

Could be that Bob K has already (unknowingly) touched against the tip of a VERY LARGE iceberg in his pursuit of justice for HG pilots at Torrey Pines.

Full Speed Ahead!

That's quite a bombshell. Wait until the FBI finds out that the guys who called the cops on BobK were running an operation where people came from all over the world to get high.

Rick,

You do know about the high profile HG pilot(s) during the late 1980s (early to mid 90s?) that were involved with serious drug (smuggling) business, right? Maybe not.
Still, from good sources it was happening. Lots of "powder" could fit inside LE Tubes arriving from outside country. Who better to arrange such
doings than an official employed to STOP such activity . . . in a US city bordering a foreign country well known as just such a source? . . . Hmmmmmm.

I heard about these guys.

Then I heard about Rich. That was upsetting because the Rich I knew from the 1981 XC-Classic seemed really in control of his life.

I held competitions in the Owens in '84 and '84 and never saw it used. Maybe I was just naive but everyone seemed really serious about flying. If there's a way to get higher than flying hang gliders in the Owens, I don't know what it is.

I needed to do some research to remember the details - but back in 1985 Chris Bulger was thrown from an aerotow trike (before Dragonflys came along) and killed. This occurred during a break in the US Nationals at Chelan, WA. The relevance to this thread is that the Feds were evidently looking for him, at the time, at or near the flying site/LZ.

On a personal note, I worked for a hang gliding shop (that no longer exists) back in 1993-94. It was located not too far from northern Giorgia. My boss was very erratic in his behavior at times, and had a "Just do what I say, don't ask questions!" type of attitude. At other times, coinciding with certain persons visiting, he would act in a VERY excitable/excited manner. A classic sign of the partaking of things - stronger than caffeine. I ended up quitting after about 6 months - but I stayed in the area for a while longer.

It wasn't long afterwards that the local pilot community got much more friendly towards me. They revealed their suspicions that the shop was a drug distribution hub. This would explain certain visitors to the shop who seemed to have no interest in flying. It also explained some of my "students" who actually DID take lessons. They came from a couple thousand miles away - for a week or less of lesson time, then back home they went. One young guy from the mid west showed up for lessons in his VERY nice Lamborghini. He explained that "My family owns some gas stations." Acceptable explanation I suppose.

As details came in, I learned that a co-owner of the shop, who lived mainly in Florida, and who had a small plane, would fly up to a tiny grass strip airport, local to the shop. He'd spend the weekend, then head back to Florida. (? ? ?)

I, myself, never saw "product" (clearly, I was part of the "front business" only) but WAY too many things added up.

Back onto the specific topic -

There's no doubt that David Jebb had (and/or has) ample access to certain "cultural advantages" associated with his time as a San Diego narcotics cop. Has or does he make use of such advantages? Does his son Gabe? Does Robin Marien?

Perhaps all David Jebb wanted (and got) was a free lease from the City of San Diego which allowed (allows?) him to bring in a cool $1,000,000+ every year - for the last 16 years. With such large sums coming in very regularly, it is pretty easy to not only keep your inflatable canopy stock very clean but to launder any number of other things, as well. Hmmmmmm ?
