Hand Torrey Pines over to Bill Moyes

Postby dhmartens » Tue Dec 16, 2014 2:50 pm

This could be the solution we are all looking for. In exchange for allowing US Marines to be stationed at Darwin, Bill Moyes would administer Torrey Pines Gliderport.
This giant trophy could be realized through the AUSFTA treaty and R3 visa program.

WW Paragliding Changes

As of today, Wills Wing will cease the distribution and sale of paragliders and paragliding harnesses. We will continue to sell helmets and parachutes for paragliding, and we will continue to offer our very popular, and recently updated book - "Paragliding - A Pilot’s Training Manual."

In cooperation with Swing and Airwave we have established new distributors in North America for Swing and Airwave paragliders, and all of our paragliding dealers will continue to have ready access to both product lines. Please see our paragliding page for accessories and resources.

This has not been an easy decision for us to reach, as we have been in the paragliding business for more than 16 years. We love aviation in all forms and we’ve very much enjoyed being a part of the growth and development of paragliding in the United States. At this time, however, we have a number of important projects under development in the hang gliding side of our business, and we feel that it is necessary for the success of those projects that we re-focus our somewhat limited resources in that direction.

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to all of our paragliding customers for their business and support over the years. We remain at your service with regard to supplying your needs for helmets, parachutes, and the Paragliding Training Manual.

Note by Rick Masters: Wills Wing made this announcement when the global paragliding death total stood at (at least) 554.

I bought my used Arcus in 2004, and it was a ... Wills Wing.

On July 14, 1991, David Wheelock of California was performing aerobatics over Kualoa Valley on O'ahu, Hawaii, when all the lines connecting him to the canopy of his Wills Wing paraglider snapped, slinging him off into the air at one thousand feet or more. His widow immediately sued Kuaola Ranch, Sport Kites and Wills Wing president Rob Kells for negligence. The lawsuit went on for years, culminating in a court decision that voided waivers in Hawaii. Without waivers, every lawsuit required a court trial and Hawaiian sport providers and their associated companies suddenly were exposed to unacceptable risks. The decision by Wills Wing to terminate paraglider production was based, in part, on this court decision and, I would assume, a re-evaluation by the company of its core competencies.

Ever hear the term "hanging by a thread?" Wills Wing probably realized that by producing paragliders, its survival was hanging by a thread, so they went back to doing what they do best - building great hang gliders.

Motorhead Jeff Goin commented on his 1999 Arcus, "I had two parachutal stall events with an Arcus and 2 other pilots I know have had parachutal stalls with it (all under power). One of mine was while free flying and it recovered from a cascading collapse when I stood up in the harness. Another happened while under power—I hit the ground from that one. I was climbing, barely, through about 70 feet in mid-afternoon conditions. I hit turbulence while holding light brake pressure (about 2) and the wing basically stopped flying. It remained fully inflated as I descended, nearly vertically to the ground under full power. "

He also said it was the slowest paraglider he had ever flown. Hang gliding after riding in that boat must have been some kind of thrill.

From the Wheelock case, WPGA adds
WPGA wrote:# A risk must be a known risk for it to be properly assumed. Prosser Keaton, Torts, § 68 at 480-81 (5th ed. 1984).
# Plaintiff alleges gross negligence on defendant's part in misrepresenting the safety of the paraglider.
# How deep is any gross negligence on the part of commercial entities serving soaring parachute activity?

RM and self have been pushed out of editing at Wikipedia on soaring parachute safety matters. After many years, here is the super poor section status where one aches how much opportunity is missed; see how deeply the article in its safety section misses the verifiable load of 1270+ fatalities that RM has on file:
