I've met a number of reporters since my recent serial jailing, and I'd like to feature some of their work.

Let me start with a fellow named J.C. Playford. JC is a free lance journalist, and he knows his rights. He has his own YouTiube channel named NewsNowSanDiego. Ground handling accident. Jumat was Brunei's pioneer paraglider and the state's unofficial representative for paragliding. On January 29, while training a student, "a sudden gust of wind carried Junaidi away when he was still on the ground with the harness still attached to his parachute, getting ready to pack his gear." The instructor landed face-down, fracturing his skull and suffering multiple broken bones. "His friends and family had since the day of the mishap been performing mass hajat prayers seeking mercy and blessings for his swift recovery." He died on February 2 after four days in a coma. He leaves behind a wife, a daughter and a son.

If Jumat had been wearing his helmet while hooked into his paraglider, he may well have survived this accident.
But when BobK pointed out an instructor at Torrey Pines doing the same thing in front of students, he was mistreated by the paragliding business, ostracized by the national association that claims to support hang gliding in the U.S., and subsequently illegally denied his right to fly in a public venue.

Most of today's pathetic bunch of hang gliding pilots, who stupidly delivered our organization into the hands of inimical parachutists, didn't seem to mind.

Paraglider injured in crash in northeast

On Holy Saturday in Hainburg, Austria, a paraglider has suffered serious injury with his paraglider. The man's paraglider was suddenly pulled into the air due to a strong gust of wind. At about three meters high, the loops of the steering lines slipped out of his wrists. The 48-year-old lost control and fell from two and a half meters.
The parachutist, who was busy with so-called ground handling exercises, landed on his back on the grass of the launch area and was dragged a few meters by the paraglider along the ground, said the State Police of Lower Austria. The 48-year-old was stabilized at the scene and then flown to Vienna SMZ-Ost with the emergency helicopter Christophorus 9
The man, who was wearing a helmet and a harness, was fitted with a back protector. According to the executive, a spinal trauma was suspected.

Why didn't anyone tell the guy to put his helmet on?
Were they afraid they'd be kicked out of their national Austrian freeflight association if they did?

USHPA has set yet another terrible example. If I were an investor, I wouldn't give a dime to an organization that kicks out the very people willing to step forward and document safety issues. Maybe that's what's really behind their recent loss of insurance. Anyone who's watched that video and realized that USHPA kicked out the camera man while giving Gabe Jebb an "Instructor of the Year" award would be crazy to invest their money with USHPA. Now USHPA is going around with their hand out trying to replace the insurance they lost.

To clarify, it was the Brunei soaring parachutist that didn't have his helmet on.
My mistake. The Austrian did.
Doesn't change the argument, though.
When you're going to do something dangerous, armor up.
I had a friend, a doctor, who would only fly the Owens in motocross gear (leg and shoulder armor).
I was impressed.

Paraglider Dies on Rancho Palos Verdes Beach
The man lost his grip and fell to his death onto Ranch Palos Verdes Beach

A paraglider fell to his death on Saturday after a strong gust of wind lifted his chute over 100 feet in the air. Authorities said the man then lost his grip and fell onto rocky Rancho Palos Verdes beach.
The Press Telegram reports that 44-year-old Seoung Man Lee of Torrance was pronounced dead at the scene around 6:25 p.m.
Lt. Cheryl MacWillie of the Coroner's Department said witnesses told investigators that Lee was not wearing his harness or his safety helmet as he was inspecting or preparing to store his paragliding apparatus close to the shoreline.
He was holding onto both steering handles that were secured by lanyards when a sudden gust of wind inflated the canopy, MacWillie said.
Witnesses watched as Lee was catapulted into the air.
"It was pretty stressful as far as just witnessing it," said Joyce West, who was walking along the beach with her husband. "We were all standing around, `What can we do? What can we do?"'
West and her husband were walking past some paragliders before the accident. They turned around saw Lee in the air hanging from the sail.
West told the Press Telegram, “He was lifted from the beach and quickly gained altitude. After reaching about 100 feet, he lost hold of his grasp and fell to a rocky patch on the ground.”
West said it just looked like Lee panicked because it took him only seconds to get all the way up to the point where he fell.
According to authorities, Lee was married, however his wife was not with him at the beach.
