Hindsight is 20/20.

I just read through most of this topic, and I just want to give a special thanks to Joe Faust, Scott Wise, Warren Narron, Bill Cummings, and Rick Masters for their posts. We may not have agreed on everything, but I believe we shared a common desire to improve the sport of hang gliding through better associations between pilots.

The banning of Joe Faust from hanggliding.org was a turning point in the sport. Joe's banning wasn't the first such abuse on hanggliding.org, but it was the most clear cut in a long history of such injustices. I believe Joe's banning opened many eyes to the ongoing abuses at hanggliding.org, and it has left a bad taste with those who watched it.

But Joe's banning wasn't the last. Just recently Chris McKeon found himself mysteriously unable to post. Unlike Joe's banning, Jack hasn't even bothered to give a reason for banning Chris. But again, for those who've watched it, this abuse has left a bad taste about hanggliding.org.

A society - any society - is an inplicit agreement between members for their mutual benefit. We are our brother's keepers to some extent in any society. We owe a duty of care to our peers. That's what has broken down on hanggliding.org, and it is now a hollow shell of its former self.

I know that this was a very divisive topic here on the U.S. Hawks. I think that the primary division has been between those who believe we owe a duty to our peers and those who don't. I am happy to be among those who have felt that duty and answered its call.

And for those who didn't see Joe Faust's banning as a sufficient cause, I hope the recent treatment of Chris McKeon will help tip the scales for you. We write our history one day at a time.

Hi BobK,

I have retained a law firm which is processing a lawsuit against Facebook.
Once I have defeated Facebook I will have the experience necessary to turn against the insurance cartel so I am announcing my "Intent to Sue Ushpa".
Creating a competing organization and being banned will not stand.

Wouldn't want to turn around and see my glider flying off without me, though, like Jim Bede's inflatable helium wing.
(Why not use hydrogen? Are you smoking something?)

The ultimate, "Hydro-glider".
Was the Harlo flying the Blimp, or was the Blimp flying the Harlo. Ironic picture taken by a friend, directly over my parents house (red dot), at Torrance Beach Cliffs.

I served in the Ford/Carter post-war era. Even though we were well-trained and well-tested, we knew that we hadn't faced the ultimate challenge. I remember trying to pretend that there were real bullets coming at me, but as I charged ahead I always knew they were either blanks or carefully aimed rounds safely above my head. There's no substitute for testing a man under real fire. We always treated the men with actual combat experience with reverence. :salute:

=================================================================================================================================
For me, the real "fire" was coming out of the mouths of two nasty Marine Drill Sergeants, that I encountered in 1965, when I was "drafted".
While standing at attention they would come around behind you and reach around and crush your sternum with their fist, you didn't see it coming, you couldn't breathe, you thought you were dead, but you stood there and took it, "YES SIR!!!".
Out on the training ranges was a blessing compared to the rear areas, but in the end we loved our DI for being so tough on us, for he knew what was about to confront us in, "the horrors of war".
In Vietnam there were only two things, the person on your right and the person on your left.
Nothing else mattered.
The Red Cross, round eyed, "donut dollys", and the nurses payed the highest reverence to the guys coming out of the bush, by taking them in, sharing a shot gun or two or a "Bon Sun Bomber", giving them a hot bath with all the trimmings, if you know what I mean, and sending them on in the morning with the biggest smiles on their faces. :srofl:

There is an invisible wall between civilian and combat trained people. one is a little laid back, one is hard and overly disciplined sometimes, from "War" training, but in the end, they stand together(remember the person on your left and right).
Standing together and staying alive, FIRST, took a great covert "plan", then leading the team on hit and run missions against the enemy.

US HAWKS is a free "open book" that anyone, enemies included, can see.
USHPA is a closed book that is not free, and played close to the vest so they have a distinct advantage when it comes to "divide and conquer". How dare they call themselves "Free Fliers".
I don't think it's a, "Great Decline", I think it's a lack of Hang Glider Pilots, few as they are, not coming up with ideas (and funding that's the hard part) in private, to enhance their "master trade" of Piloting an air framed glider and training new HG pilots.
Organizations, are great social enterprises to banter and show your wares, but they do little in the name of actually putting things into working plans and working drawings.
Frank's training glider and Joe's 5' packed deserve massive support.

Here is a simple drawing I did of a possible "Hang Glider Flight Simulator", that could be mobile and "all inclusive" in that, even a paraglider "pilot" could check it out. ha.

Two "wind trailers", an instructor pilot and two helpers, various cameras, and a green screen back drop, and of course a Hang Glider, simple. A really cool video is made which would go with the instruction, and could be a part of the HG rating system.
"Ground handling a Glider is so basic to building one's confidence levels, so why not give a student the ability to experience the thrill of, "dancing" with this wing over their heads, in a safe and controlled environment, AND a great video to go along.

What do you guys think? wouldn't this put many more people under a Hang Glider without the process of running down a hill, and caring it up, over and over, which may come later let's hope.
The "wind tunnel effect" could be increased as the student progressed, and give them ever increasing confidence in the, "muscle memory" of their own body, so, when and if they actually launched into the air on their own, they would know that all the hours of "pre-flight" training was well worth it.

Here would be a "hoot", bring this "simulator" to the Torrey Glider Port public property, and give people free "rides", and also get a great personalized music video of themselves that they will have for the rest of their lives.

Along with building this "flight simulator", and bringing Franks training glider forward, US HAWKS could also enhance ourselves by incorporating our own "Videography" department, "for all to see".
hanggliding.org has chosen their own path and so be it, but the constant, "word" bantering with them
only slows us down.
It's time to "fight" on a new level.

From a humble "HO" Hawk.
C:+o)
oh and the words, "Great Decline" don't seem to fit. There is nothing great about declining.

"ROUND AND ROUND IT GOES"

You've guys are simply overlooking our Prime Asset as Hang Glider Pilots who love to Fly. That untapped Asset is of Course Paragliders. It is just like regarding Northern California quite potential heading into a Drought. Well the Last time this State under went drought conditions. Here in Northern California watched how much water We used. While at the same time wWe shipped water down South to Southern California. That way Southern Californians could go on using water to their Hearts Content. They were free to wash down their Driveways, keep their swimming pools full, and so on. But this time, it will be a case of Goes around Comes Around. For this time Southern California will ship water to us here in Northern California.

Same deal with Flyin g. Back in the Eighties We Hang Glider Pilots Graciously gave our Organization to the Paraglider Pilots. Well now that we have troubles We can count on the Fact that Paraglider Pilots will be there to Help us.

This was tongue in cheek right.
They changed our (USHGA) bylaws by changing the name to USHPA and throwing out the negative “G” load requirements without a 2/3rds or 3/4 membership vote. This for starting corrupt tyranny action. They did a
feelings vote that held no horsepower that the regional directors were bound by.
