Pocketless airfoil-forming battens for SS HG wings

Postby JoeF » Wed Jan 18, 2012 2:45 pm

What have we toward pocketless airfoil-forming battens for SS HG wings?

Motivation, so far:
* Sliding airfoil-forming battens into a wing's sail has some unnatural aspects to the operation. Heat-of-sliding caution, shaping where shaping is not, pocket having and pocket making, perhaps limitations on camber, and stress on the inserted batten's shape. What else?

* Seeking alternatives that might be with advantages.

From time to time, drop a note toward the above quest, as might be fun for you.

Offer on topic:

A Velcro exploration? Bond a Velcro hook line to wing surface. Bond loop part to a formed rib batten. After other assembly, then apply the rib batten to the wing. This may have some niche HG activity uses.

Alternative: Slit-pocket using Velcro or other type of zipper. Set rib batten into slit-pocket all at once; then close the slit-pocket.

Alternative: Smart rib? Trigger to limp a perma-rib batten. Then to complete assembly for flight, trigger the smart rib-batten to stiffen from the limp phase. After flight, trigger to limp phase for packing. Some might develop a very smart rib-batten that has a dial-an-airfoil capability, perhaps with dialed changes during flight or during landing sequence, etc.
