I been here before

Postby dagobarbz » Fri Aug 07, 2015 12:23 pm

Some of you might remember me from Torrey Pines in the 80s, when Flight Realities held the cliff. I worked there for a couple years, shuffling wuffos out of the LZ and pretending to be flight director when not soaring on my "lunch break."

I ate a lot of "lunches" back then.

I also used to do cartoons for Hang Gliding Magazine, and worked on Bill (Pork) Roecker's 'Windsport' magazine back in the day.

Welcome Barb!!!

By the way, we recently had a great hang gliding reunion at Dockweiler Beach a few months back (see the topic titled: "US Hawks Announces 44th Anniv. Otto Lilienthal Meet / Fly-In").

Some of us have continued to go there for some gentle fun flying at the beach. In fact, we've got a club called the Friends of Dockweiler Gliding Society with at least 3 pilots who have USHGA numbers under 50!! They're holding a regular Fun Day at Dockweiler on the third Sunday of every month (the week after our Torrey Hawks "Second Sunday at Torrey"). I often drive up from San Diego, so let me know if you'd like to ride share on either event.

The last time I flew Torrey was in the mid-90s. Me and Dangerous Dave got into a shear, and watched people shoot straight down to the beach from 2000 ft. up. Yeah, I know. Not supposed to do that, but then we landed and the wind picked up to 50 or so. I don't think I could ever top that flight at Torrey and now there are too many rules.

No, nope. I do not fly Torrey these days. Or anywhere. Can't put a kite on a motorcycle. (Bob Wills did, but I don't wanna)

Nope, that's another thing I don't do any more. No places left to fly, and now there are drones to add to the mix!
